All students should be provided with opportunities to engage in authentic, meaningful literacy instruction that is aligned with the National Reading Panel's foundations of reading including phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Whether through a balanced literacy or reading and writing workshop approach, teachers need support in putting the pieces together.  GEIG provides professional development as well as coaching and support to teachers in the areas of:

  • teaching guided reading groups;
  • conferring with readers and writers;
  • planning for mini-lessons;
  • using assessment data for plan for whole group, small group, and individual instruction, and;
  • working through the structures of a successful literacy block.

GEIG also works with schools and districts on creating instructional frameworks that provide the foundation for literacy instruction.  This foundation provides administrators with look-fors and teachers with a framework that continues to support teacher autonomy and differentiation of instruction.

Finally, as schools continue to support students using a Multi-Tiered System of Support, GEIG works with districts to create a standard treatment protocol of interventions to ensure that all students are able to master the content and skills necessary as readers and writers.
